Where in the world are we from? Freebie!

One of my favorite Social Studies units in 2nd grade is our family ancestry unit! One of our standards involves students comparing their life to the lives of older generations and tracing their family history.  We learn about immigration and Ellis Island, which means lots of great literature for read alouds (and that I love!)
We have students complete an interview and then they present about their family.  The information is used to create this map below! We take pictures of all the students and connect a string between their picture and the country their ancestor(s) is from.  It always looks great!  (The fabric map is from JoAnn Fabric.)

Here's what the whole board looks like when it's finished!  The white papers are dialogue boxes where students share about how their family came to live in The United States.

I had the students pose like they were speaking, and then I arranged the dialogue box to look like it was coming out of their mouth.  So cute!

If you happen to be teaching a unit similar to this, here are some books I highly recommend:

Have a great week everyone!! :)
