Mosaic of My Heart - Valentine Art Project

Why, yes, Valentine's Day is right around the corner! And I've got a great Valentine project for you.  My kiddos will be sending this cute project home as a gift for their mom or dad.

It's perfect timing, too, since Sunny Days in Second Grade is hosting her Show and Tell Tuesday all about Valentine's Day!

I'm also linking up with Nicole at Teaching with Style! She's got a great art project linky going on!

I call this project "Mosaic of My Heart".

After a whole class brainstorm about all the things we love, students tear pieces of construction paper.  Those pieces will be glued together to create a tear art heart mosaic.

On select pieces, students write down some things that they love. They can write about places, people, pets, food... anything! Those pieces are put in the mosaic and surrounded by other blank heart pieces.

On black construction paper, you trace a heart in pencil. (You can make an easy heart tracer by cutting a heart out of tag board.)

Then I tore a bunch of Valentine colored paper. I like to make sure all edges of the paper have torn edges.

I chose to write the things I love only on red paper.

Then, you glue all the pieces on leaving no black spaces, overlapping the pieces as needed.

Some of my kids wanted to use blue. Not really a V-day color, but that's okay by me! It's their art! :)

You can add a writing component where students write about the things in their mosaic that they love.   Or you can use this cute poem I wrote!  (Click the pictures to grab both pages.)

So there you have it! Happy Valentine's Day -- hope you can use it!

PS: Aren't those borders cute?? Surfin' through Second is creating the most adorable clip art and frames.  You can snag these cute borders here.
